Thank you for applying to be a volunteer with the Roger Williams Park Botanical Center! We offer a diverse range of volunteer opportunities aimed at people who are passionate about horticulture, environmental conservation, and education. Volunteers will have the chance to engage in various indoor and outdoor activities while contributing to the enhancement of the botanical center's facilities and programs. Opportunities and Responsibilities could include:
 

1. Indoor Greenhouse Team:

  • Assist with tasks within the four greenhouses and occasionally the plant storage poly-houses.
  • Participate in plant care activities including watering, pruning, and propagation.

2. Outdoor Garden Team:

  • Contribute to landscaping and horticulture efforts.
  • Utilize native plant knowledge for preservation and maintenance.
  • Engage in weeding and invasive plant removal to maintain garden health.

3. Carnivorous Plant Team:

  • Work with the carnivorous plant display, including cultivation and propagation.
  • Assist with weeding and maintaining the carnivorous plant area.

4. Outdoor Edible Forest Garden:

  • Cultivate edible plants such as raspberries, blackberries, paw paws, and herbs in the outdoor edible forest garden by the lake.

5. Produce Donation Gardens:

  • Participate in growing produce for donation to local charities and soup kitchens.
  • Learn techniques to optimize fruit and vegetable growth and address pest-related challenges.

6. Japanese Garden Team:

  • Assist in the maintenance of the Japanese Garden by the RWP Carousel.
  • Learn about tree types, engage in general arborist work, and perform tree trimming and hedge cutting.
  • Aid in trash removal to upkeep the aesthetics of the garden.

7. Rose Maze Team:

  • Assist in rose cultivation, trimming, and replanting within the rose maze area.

8. Orchid Team:

  • Assist in cultivating the indoor orchid display, including weekly watering and fertilizing.

9. Goat Care Team:

  • Participate in caring for the goats on-site, including feeding and cleaning their area.
  • Greet visitors and engage in educational interactions about the goats.

10. Adult Programs Team:

  • Conduct docent tours for visitors.
  • Lead plant workshops and art workshops.
  • Mentor new volunteers joining the program.

11. Kids Education Team:

  • Facilitate school field trips and activities for high school seniors and MET students.
  • Organize family fun craft days and activities in the children's garden.

12. Events:

  • Assist in organizing and hosting events such as Fairy Garden Days, Wreath Workshops, and seasonal décor installations.

13. Office Help:

  • Assist with administrative tasks including posting upcoming events in online community calendars and organizing supplies.

Additional Notes:

  • Volunteers may have the opportunity to engage in special projects such as social media management, grant research and writing, and organizing and storing supplies.

Note: The responsibilities outlined above are subject to change and may be adapted based on the needs of the Botanical Center and the interests and skills of volunteers.
